In a music industry dominated by Bollywood glamour and commercial pop, The Local Train has carved a niche with its soul-stirring lyrics, raw energy, and a sound that blends modern rock with Indian ethos. Since their inception in 2008, the band has become a torchbearer of independent music in India, captivating audiences with emotionally charged performances and poignant storytelling.

Hailing from Chandigarh and now based in New Delhi, The Local Train has emerged since 2008 as one of India’s most compelling indie rock bands. With a lineup of Paras Thakur (lead guitar & vocals), Ramit Mehra (bass), and Sahil Sarin (drums), the band has charted a remarkable course in the Hindi/Urdu rock scene

Origins & Rise

The Local Train was born in Chandigarh, when singer-songwriter Raman Negi and bassist Ramit Mehra started collaborating musically. They were soon joined by Sahil Sarin on drums, and later by Paras Thakur on lead guitar in 2011. Their shared love for Hindi and Urdu poetry, combined with western rock influences, formed the foundation of their distinctive sound.

Their initial success came through self-released singles like Choo Lo and Aaoge Tum Kabhi, which went viral on YouTube and struck a chord with young listeners across the country. With no major label support, the band moved to Delhi in 2012 to take their passion full-time, performing across colleges and small venues while developing a cult following.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

The turning point came in 2015, when The Local Train won Sennheiser’s Top50 band contest, a national competition judged by industry veterans. This win provided them with studio resources and national exposure. Later that year, they released their debut album “Aalas Ka Pedh”, a powerful collection of tracks that explored love, loss, freedom, and identity.

Songs like Dil Mere, Yeh Zindagi Hai and Manzil highlighted their ability to express complex emotions through accessible, melodic rock, and the album quickly became one of the most downloaded indie records in India.

Musical Style and Themes

The Local Train’s music is a fusion of Indian lyrical tradition and Western rock instrumentation. Influenced by bands like Porcupine Tree, U2, Linkin Park, and Indian Ocean, their compositions feature soaring guitar riffs, atmospheric synths, and poetic lyrics in Hindi and Urdu.

Lyrically, the band delves into topics such as:

  • Spirituality and Self-realization (e.g., Khudi)

  • Disillusionment with modern life (e.g., Gustaakh)

  • Love, longing, and introspection (e.g., Aaoge Tum Kabhi, Choo Lo)

Visual Storytelling and Cultural Impact

The Local Train has also set a benchmark in visual storytelling. Their music videos, like the animated masterpiece “Mizaaj” and the cyberpunk-inspired “Gustaakh”, have been featured at film festivals like the Miami Sci-Fi Film Festival and praised by Rolling Stone India.

The band’s refusal to conform to Bollywood norms has made them a symbol of India’s indie revolution. They’ve toured across 90+ cities, played at major festivals like NH7 Weekender, SulaFest, and OnePlus Music Fest, and built a fiercely loyal fan base through grassroots promotion and DIY ethics.

Challenges and Lineup Change

In 2022, founding vocalist Raman Negi amicably parted ways with the band. While this marked the end of an era, it also opened a new chapter for The Local Train. Paras, Ramit, and Sahil continued the journey, choosing collaboration and evolution over disbandment.

In 2024, they released Tu Hai Kahaan with Lucky Ali for the film Do Aur Do Pyaar, signaling a new direction with fresh voices and broader experimentation.

Legacy and The Road Ahead

Today, The Local Train remains India’s most influential Hindi rock band, a beacon for young artists who want to bypass the mainstream and speak directly to listeners.

They are currently working on their third studio album, crafting it slowly and thoughtfully from different parts of the country. Despite being physically apart, their artistic chemistry remains strong, driven by a shared vision of meaningful music.

With an unwavering commitment to honesty, artistry, and emotion, The Local Train is not just a band — it’s a movement. One that echoes the voices, hopes, and truths of a generation.
