Animal as Leaders Pioneering a new Frontier in Djent and Progressieve metal

Animals as Leaders has carved out a unique niche in the world of progressive metal with their intricate compositions, virtuosic playing, and innovative use of technology. Founded by guitarist Tosin Abasi in 2007, the band has continually pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in instrumental music.

Animals as Leaders was formed after the dissolution of Tosin Abasi’s previous band, Reflux. Encouraged by Prosthetic Records to create a solo album, Abasi crafted what would become the self-titled debut in 2009. The album was a revelation, showcasing complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and a blend of metal, jazz, and electronica influences. Joined by guitarist Javier Reyes and drummer Matt Garstka, Animals as Leaders has released several critically acclaimed albums, including “Weightless” (2011), “The Joy of Motion” (2014), “The Madness of Many” (2016), and “Parrhesia” (2022).

Animals as Leaders Pioneers of Djent, blending, progressive metal, and jazz influences

One of the most distinctive aspects of Animals as Leaders’ sound is their use of 7- and 8-string guitars. These extended range instruments allow for deeper, more resonant bass notes and higher, more articulate melodies, expanding the harmonic possibilities and enabling complex, multi-layered compositions. Polyrhythms, where two or more conflicting rhythms are played simultaneously, are a
hallmark of the band’s style. Combined with odd time signatures, these elements create a sense of unpredictability and complexity that challenges and engages listeners.

Tosin Abasi

Tosin Abasi is known for his innovative playing techniques. Hybrid picking combines pick and fingerstyle playing, allowing for rapid alternation between different types of articulation. Thumping, a technique similar to slap bass, involves using the thumb to strike the strings, producing a percussive, rhythmic sound that adds a dynamic layer to the music. Sweep picking involves a fluid, sweeping motion of the pick across multiple strings to play fast arpeggios, while tapping uses both hands on the fretboard to produce rapid, complex sequences of notes. These techniques contribute to the band’s signature fluid, yet highly technical sound.
