Sonu Nigam has been banned in the Kannada film industry

“Sonu Nigam has been banned in the Kannada film industry.”

In a surprising twist, Bollywood playback legend Sonu Nigam has found himself at the center of a controversy in Karnataka, where his recent comments during a live concert have led to strong backlash and a professional freeze-out by the Kannada film industry.

The Incident That Sparked It All

During an April 25, 2025 performance in Bengaluru, Sonu Nigam was asked by an audience member to sing in Kannada. The request—shouted repeatedly from the crowd—seemed to irritate Nigam, who responded by saying:

“I didn’t like the way he shouted ‘Kannada, Kannada’. This is the reason behind the incident in Pahalgam.”

His comment, referencing a recent terror attack in Kashmir, was viewed by many as disrespectful and insensitive, especially by the Kannada-speaking public who felt he was equating their cultural pride with extremism.

Industry Backlash: Bans and Boycotts

The fallout was immediate. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) declared a non-cooperation policy, effectively banning Sonu Nigam from the Kannada film industry until he offers a clear, unconditional apology.

Additionally, producers of the upcoming film Kuladalli Keelyavudo removed his song “Manasu Haadtade” from the soundtrack. Director K. Ramnarayan said:

“We cannot tolerate an insult to Kannada and then pretend as if nothing happened.”

Sonu Nigam Responds: “Sorry Karnataka”

Facing intense criticism, Nigam issued a statement on Instagram, defending his intentions:

  • He claimed he felt threatened by a group of aggressive fans.

  • Stressed that he has always respected Kannada culture and included Kannada songs in his sets.

  • Concluded with a heartfelt note:

“Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.”

While some fans accepted his apology, many in the film industry continue to hold their ground.

Bigger Questions: Celebrity Responsibility and Cultural Sensitivity

This episode isn’t just about one concert. It has reignited larger conversations about:

  • How celebrities navigate regional identities in India.

  • The fragility of artistic relationships between Bollywood and regional cinema.

  • The power of public sentiment in holding artists accountable.
